On Hagelberger Street - Tom Cunningham - the hagelbergers

Songlyrics:

Many's the time l left town and then came back again
When something always seemed to have gone wrong
Coming back and looking to find some kind of friend
l always seemed to find one 'fore too long

We ran down those alleys and we shouted at the moon
And sang under the glow of a streetlight
When you're young and you're innocent
You don't feel the cold in the dark of night

You brush it with your fingers äs you're following your feet
To Hagelberger Street

Beauty it was blinding with a fiercely shining light
Lord you know that's how it was back then
Somewhere on the edges of a half-remembered dream
She is painting pictures with the sunlight streaming in

Boys they will be boys, you know we didn't mean no harm
Only thinking about what was to come later that same day
When you're far away from home
It sure is good to have a place to stay

Running up the stairway, you don't know who you'll meet
In Hagelberger Street
Hagelberger Street

The snow feel down on Kreuzberg like a miracle
Silent and forgiving as a prayer
You ran a little faster just to catch that city bus
You could smell the coal smoke in the air

When you're young, you think that you know all there is to know
Every secret of the human heart
But in time that certainty it slowly melts away
Like the snow in early springtime in the Kreuzberg Park

But l'm thinking about that springtime when the air was soft
and sweet
On Hagelberger Street

Now please don't take me for a sentimentalist
Don't intend to send no valentine
Hagelberger Strasse, it was never paved with gold
It could be pretty rocky at times

But l met old Jesse in the bar the other night
We raised a glass and cursed and praised our luck
Looking back we had to laugh at everything we did
And we agreed that it was all a part of growing up

It was never ended, but the story is complete
Of Hagelberger Street

In a dusty corner of your memory we'll meet
Back on Hagelberger Street
